Puzzle Features

The Seasons was Mucha’s first series of decorative panels , created in 1896, and it became one of his most popular series. In fact, it became so popular that Champenois asked Mucha to produce at least two more sets based on the same theme, in 1897 and 1900.

For this reason, the Art Nouveau Mucha Season puzzle is an experience of meeting and learning, piece by piece, about the beauty and style of Parisian art of the last decades of the nineteenth century.

The Art Nouveau Mucha Puzzle The Season in detail

The 1000-piece Mucha Seasons puzzle from D-Toys is a splendid example of Art Nouveau puzzles and the Parisian style of the Belle Epoque.
The idea of personifying the seasons was not new: examples could be found in the works of the Old Masters, however the stylistic intent and aesthetic taste were clearly the offspring of the Parisian atmosphere of those years.
The colors of the puzzle are very bright and the details are extremely accurate and refined. The puzzle pieces are sturdy and fit together well.

Description of the artwork

The Seasons was Alfons Mucha’s first series of decorative panels and became one of his most popular. In fact, it became so popular that Champenois asked Mucha to produce at least two more sets based on the same theme in 1897 and 1900.

The idea of personifying the seasons in this Art Nouveau Mucha painting was not new. Examples could be found in the works of the Old Masters as well as in other publications by Champenois.
However, Mucha’s nymph-like women juxtaposed against seasonal countryside views breathed new life into the classical theme. In the four panels, Mucha captures the moods of the seasons: innocent spring, sultry summer, fruitful autumn, and freezing winter, which together represent the harmonious cycle of nature.

Alfons Mucha was born in 1860 in the Czech Republic. Drawing was his main hobby since childhood. In fact, he began working as a commercial artist in his late teens, painting primarily portraits and theater sets.

In 1895, the impoverished young Czech went to Paris to create a poster for Gismonda, a play starring Sarah Bernhardt , the most famous actress of the time. Bernhardt was so enamored with Mucha’s work that she signed him to a six-year contract.
Soon, “ le style Mucha ” later known as the Art Nouveau Mucha movement came to describe the new spirit transforming the city.

Gismonda’s popularity led to an influx of work for Mucha. “The Seasons” represents one such commission. They represent a set of four decorative panels for Champenois, a wealthy patron, who commissioned two more sets of panels with the same theme.

The Seasons Mucha series from 1896

The Seasons series of 1896 was Mucha’s first series of decorative panels and became one of his most popular. In fact, it became so popular that Champenois asked Mucha to produce at least two more sets based on the same theme in 1897 and 1900.

In the four seasonal panels shown, Mucha captures the moods of the seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter, representing the cycle of nature.

Mucha personifies Spring as a blond, innocent figure. The translucent white dress is a metaphor for virginity, the potential for new life.
In his hand he holds a branch shaped like a lyre. Three little birds sit on the lyre, a symbol of new life.

In the 1896 painting, Summer is depicted against a delicate blue sky. Mucha portrays Summer as a sensual, dark-haired woman sunbathing under the glorious sunshine.
Lazing among the red poppies, Summer leans against a vine, dabbing her feet in the shallow pool below. This serene image, a metaphor for adulthood , is beloved by many.

Autumn is depicted as a playful and generous figure . Embedded in a rich tapestry of autumnal plants, fruits, and flowers, her long auburn hair supports a wreath of chrysanthemums. She picks grapes from a bountiful vineyard, a metaphor for the abundant provisions that autumn offers.

Instead, in Winter the influence of Japanese culture and woodcuts is best exemplified.
Standing in a frozen, snow-covered landscape and huddled in a green cloak (representing future growth), the Winter Woman warms a baby bird, while three other birds look on enviously.

The Art Nouveau style Mucha Alfons

Influenced by Hans Makart ‘s The Five Senses , his style is also inspired by the Japanese woodblock decorative style. In fact, Mucha’s Seasons (1896) were painted on pânneaux décoratifs (decorative panels) typical of Japanese art .
Each painting depicts a young woman embodying the harmonious cycle of nature, against a background of distinctive seasonal features that convey the atmosphere of each season.
In Seasons, Mucha uses nature, wildlife and women as subtle metaphors for life , death and rebirth: his spiritual philosophy was beginning to emerge.

Mucha chose to produce the Seasons in color lithography because he wanted to make art accessible and affordable for everyone: he soon realized his wish.
Consequently, the popularity of his affordable art meant that he quickly created similar pânneaux works.

Alphonse Mucha is synonymous with Art Nouveau Mucha, a style of fine arts, decorative art, and architecture that broke with 19th-century academicism in favor of florid lines inspired by the natural environment.
The works were rendered in soft pastels, depicting beautiful young women draped in neoclassical dresses, nestled among flowers, feathers, and other sensual natural forms. Mucha was celebrated not only for his advertising posters, but also for his painting, book illustrations, sculpture, and the design of theater sets, jewelry, and wallpaper.
