Description of the artwork

Known throughout the world as Canaletto, the great landscape painter Giovanni Antonio Canal was born in Venice in October 1697.

Recognized worldwide as one of the finest landscape painters of all time, he was introduced to painting by his father, a painter and theater set designer, from whom he perfectly learned the techniques of perspective. However, from his earliest works, it becomes clear that Canaletto is not one of the many eighteenth-century painters, and his pure authenticity soon emerges.

But what makes Canaletto’s works so unique and appreciated throughout the world?
Very popular among eighteenth-century landscape painters was the use of the camera obscura , a sort of primitive camera in which the painter, after covering his head and shoulders with a cloth to isolate himself from the light, traced the lines and perspectives of buildings. Using a lens, the entire image was projected backward onto a sheet of paper and then, after being enlarged to scale, the drawing was transferred to canvas. Although Canaletto also used this technique, he could not say he was entirely satisfied with it.

However, for Canaletto, the perfection of the camera obscura was not enough. Indeed, for him, the artist ‘s originality lay in his ability to improve reality by “correcting its defects.”

It was precisely from this conviction that he began to produce “capricci .” In the Capricci, Canaletto combined in the same composition real monuments, drawn from life, but located in different cities and places, with others of pure invention.
So a beautiful triumphal arch of the city of Rome in the middle of an island in the Venetian lagoon, or an unlikely Venetian stately architecture in the midst of the smoke fog of London.

Canaletto's Venice

One of the hallmarks of Canaletto’s paintings is that hypnotic quality due precisely to the subtle touches he applied to reflections and perspective, broadening the field of vision. Indeed, these subtle touches make Canaletto’s works feel like the stories and celebrations contained within the landscapes he painted.

Venice, which had always frightened painters with its almost unreal beauty—”too beautiful to be painted,” as Monet would have said a few centuries later—did not have the same effect on Canaletto, who instead found fertile ground in the city to fully express his art.
In fact, the city on the water, already magical in reality, takes on a surreal appearance in the hands of the Venetian Master.

Nothing is left to chance. In painting his canvases, he carefully selects precise lighting conditions for each particular moment of the day and contrasts between light and shadow.

Venice, St. Mark's Square with the Procuratie

A wonderful painting dating back to 1735 is that of the view of Piazza San Marco with the procuracies in Venice.

Canaletto’s painting of Piazza San Marco was one of the great master of landscape painting’s most beloved subjects.

The use of optical technology with the invention of lenses and the camera obscura was already in use in the Netherlands and Italy in the 17th century. The affirmation of this technology led to the development of landscape “vedute” painters , who reached their artistic and commercial peak in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Thanks to these technological innovations , extremely difficult paintings such as Canaletto’s Doge’s Palace and Piazza San Marco were made possible .

Canaletto was born in the magical city of Venice, and so it was that a Venetian, fortunate and inspired by the changing and ever-fascinating atmospheres of the lagoon, was able to best express his talent.

The “ view painters” were conventionally divided into realists and fantasy painters .
The former were strictly adhered to geometric and perspective pictorial rules in which the scenography of the whole was not in conflict with the exact perspective of the painted scene.
The latter, on the other hand, indulged in their imagination, blending different architectural structures with memories of places they had visited. The imaginative view was characterized by juxtaposing mythological or historical subjects that served as a backdrop to human events.

Canaletto was one of the first; indeed, his use of the camera obscura suggests a greater scientific rigor . With this medium, the painter captured various points of the scene on paper, after the inverted image, reflected by the camera onto glass, was straightened by a mirror. This allowed the painter to capture different perspectives of the view and combine them with the mastery of his craft. If one examines the minute details of the characters scattered throughout the squares or streets, they have a precision as if they were portraits from life.

However, Canaletto was not a simple view painter, but a true painter who knew how to exploit the commercial fashion of the moment, knew how to sell his art well, and for this reason went to London where he always worked successfully.

Puzzle Arte gives you the chance to relive one of the Venetian painter’s most beautiful works with this fantastic 1000-piece Canaletto Piazza San Marco puzzle.
