The puzzle depicts a bas-relief from the Temple of Horus in Edfu, one of the best-preserved religious complexes of Ptolemaic Egypt, built between 237 and 57 BC. The work depicts the scene of the coronation of the Egyptian pharaoh Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II, a sacred moment that sanctioned the indissoluble bond between the sovereign and the tutelary deities of Egypt.
At the center of the scene is Ptolemy VIII, standing frontally, depicted according to the stylized canons of Egyptian art: a rigid posture, a forward gaze, and idealized proportions that emphasize his divine nature. At his sides appear two female figures of enormous symbolic importance:
The two deities, called “ the Two Ladies ” (Nebty), perform the coronation gesture, placing on the pharaoh’s head the symbols of royal power and the unification of the Two Lands.
The scene is not a simple ritual representation, but a compendium of religious and political meanings:
The bas-relief is located in the Temple of Horus in Edfu, the largest sanctuary dedicated to the falcon god, a deity associated with royalty and the protection of the pharaoh. Built in the Ptolemaic era, the temple not only celebrated the cult of Horus, but also served to consolidate the link between the Greco-Ptolemaic pharaohs and the ancient Egyptian religious tradition.
The choice to depict Ptolemy VIII in such a traditional rite had the aim of legitimizing his authority among the Egyptian population and the powerful temple clergy, showing the continuity between the “foreign” kings of Greek origin and the native pharaohs.
The photograph of the relief is by O. Rauschenberg and faithfully captures the details of the original work: from the figures’ incisive features to the accompanying hieroglyphic inscriptions. Each element contributes to conveying the solemnity of the ritual and the symbolic richness of Egyptian art.
