Francesco Hayez ‘s The Kiss is considered the manifesto of Italian Romantic painting .
Hayez created other versions of the same subject, but this remains the most famous.
In creating The Kiss , the artist refers to another work he had previously created, Romeo and Juliet ‘s Last Kiss , 1823, oil on canvas, 291 x 202 cm, Villa Carlotta, Tremezzo (Como).
Francesco Hayez presented this first version of The Kiss at the annual Brera exhibition on 9 September 1859, the year in which, with the victory at Solferino, the liberation from the Austrians was celebrated.
The original title of the work, The Kiss. An Episode of Youth. 14th-Century Costumes. , testifies to how much the historical setting was appreciated in Italian painting of the period.
Two young people in 15th-century clothing stand embracing and kissing. The young man is entirely covered by a large cloak, while the young woman wears a simple blue dress. The boy wears a hat that covers his face, while the young woman has her long hair loose. Although the boy is hidden by the cloak, a weapon can be seen at his left side.
The lovers stand out thanks to the well-drawn contours and bright colors of the clothes.
The emotion is expressed by the female body that arches and by the joined heads in which the physiognomies are indistinguishable.
The scene takes place within a medieval architectural setting. The walls are constructed of large stone blocks. Sculpted decorations can also be seen on the doorposts. Finally, on the left, in the darkness, what appears to be the shadow of a human figure is projected onto the wall.
Hayez’s “The Kiss” puzzle depicts a seemingly intimate scene between two lovers , set in the medieval chivalric past within the walls of a castle. Romanticism in Italy manifested itself in nationalist love and hatred of foreigners, which, in the areas of present-day Lombardy, was represented by Austrian rule.
The young man kissing the girl is carrying a dagger and preparing to climb the first step of the ladder. The painting’s political message is therefore captured in these barely perceptible details. It is, perhaps, a young patriot bidding farewell to his beloved before going to battle. His left foot, resting on the step, seems to allude to an imminent separation from the young woman he passionately kisses.
In the shadows visible on the left, some historians have seen the presence of an Austrian spy monitoring the two young men.
Francesco Hayez is one of the main exponents of historical romanticism , thanks to his paintings in which the ideals of the Risorgimento linked to the concept of homeland and freedom are represented through subjects that belong to an epic and distant past.
