Description of the artwork

Dance at the Moulin Rouge is a painting by French painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. This work was created in 1889-90 and is now housed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Toulouse-Lautrec loved life intensely . In fact, every evening he was fascinated by the human spectacle that unfolded around him at the Moulin Rouge , the famous nightclub in the Montmartre district, inaugurated in 1891 and universally loved by Parisians.

Dance at the Moulin Rouge

Toulouse-Lautrec felt truly at ease in the Moulin Rouge. Indeed, in that nocturnal atmosphere, he could be authentically himself.

Complete freedom arose from the fact that no one cared either about his illness or his aristocratic origins . With this Ball at the Moulin Rouge, in particular, the painter intends to capture the ordinary madness and ambiguity of a night in Montmartre.
Henri de Toulouse Lautrec is the painter of that nocturnal delirium. For this reason, he immortalized its life, contributing to its fame: among his most famous paintings is Ball at the Moulin Rouge, also known as Valentin le Désossé Training the New Talents (1889-1890).

Toulouse Lautrec was more interested in people than places: he shows dancers, patrons, the people of the night, bodies driven by music.
Behind the gaze enraptured by the movement of La Goulue’s legs, in her sensual red stockings, there are us dressed in pink, dazzled by what the music is able to unleash.
The Ball at the Moulin Rouge is one of Toulouse-Lautrec’s most complex paintings . Indeed, the protagonists of the work are La Goulue and Valentin le désossé: we find them in the background on the left.

La Goulue and Toulouse Lautrec

A woman with red hair, a black ribbon around her neck, and a low-cut dress revealing her breasts. This is how La Gouloue is described upon her entrance to the Moulin Rouge .
La Gouloue is a dancer, the painter Henri Toulouse Lautrec portrayed her.
Apparently, the two couldn’t be more different: he comes from a wealthy, ancient noble family. She, on the other hand, is extremely poor and worked every job before finding her fortune as a dancer.

Since the Moulin Rouge, an old mill converted into a nightclub, opened, it has been a huge success; it is where the new dance that is heard about everywhere was born: the cancan .
And it was immediately a scandal, fueled by indignant newspaper articles and a few raids by the Vice Squad.

The Can Can of the Moulin Rouge

In an era when the mere sight of an ankle makes one shiver with emotion, it is no wonder that audiences flock to see low-cut dancers show off their legs sheathed in sinful black stockings as they dance.
La Goulue is one of them.
She comes from the poverty of a small town in Alsace, her name is Louise Weber, but they nicknamed her la Goulue, the greedy one, for her insatiable appetite and her habit of drinking leftovers from customers’ glasses.

Eccentric and cheeky, she is said to enjoy knocking off the top hats of the more elegant patrons with a kick of her heel.

That mix of impudence, innocence and vitality seems tailor-made to attract one of the club’s most frequent visitors: Toulouse Lautrec.

Ballo Al Moulin Rouge

The Moulin Rouge

Euphoric, wild, seductive. When it opened its doors on October 6, 1889, the Moulin Rouge was an immediate success. At the foot of the Montmartre hill, the red mill awaited painters, writers, and all Parisians to offer lightheartedness with its shows and parties.

In the foreground, the ball is silently observed by a mysterious woman dressed in a particularly flashy pink dress: she is a noble aristocrat who has lent herself for a night to the madness of the Moulin Rouge.
