Description of the artwork

Yellowed, cracked, obscured by a patina of dirt and a thick layer of varnish that no one dares remove, La Gioconda, probably the most famous painting in the Western world, is considered the pinnacle of Renaissance art .

The painting has long been the subject of study. Giorgio Vasari wrote in his Lives: Leonardo painted it for Francesco del Giocondo (a rich silk merchant).
Florentine), who had asked him for a portrait of his wife, Mona Lisa. Hence, the title La Gioconda.
However, the identification of the depicted figure with Lisa Gherardini del Giocondo is far from certain. In fact, the work is generally dated between 1503 and 1506, but some scholars place it around 1514.
For a mysterious reason Leonardo did not deliver the painting to the person who had given it to him.
commissioned, but he took it with him to France and kept it until his death.

Countless suppositions have been made and continue to be made about the identity of the Mona Lisa . Indeed, from the many studies, two are the most plausible theories.

The best known is that of Vasari, who identifies the model in the painting as the wife of the Florentine merchant and notable Francesco di Zanobi del Giocondo, hence the name, which is actually a corruption. Her real name was Mona Lisa .

Lisa is a concrete and well-defined historical figure. She was the daughter of Antonio di Nolfo Gherardini, born in 1479 in Florence’s Santo Spirito district. She married Francesco del Giocondo at sixteen and had a daughter who died in 1499. According to one of the many legends, Mona Lisa herself died before reaching thirty, in Lagonegro, Basilicata.

The subject of the Mona Lisa puzzle is undoubtedly the most famous, most loved and most discussed painting in the world.
The identity of the woman depicted remains a mystery to this day: the name Gioconda derives from Vasari ‘s statement that the painting reproduces the features of Lisa Gherardini , wife of Francesco del Giocondo and a member of the merchant bourgeoisie of Florence.

This Lisa, at the time the painting was made (between 1503 and 1505), would have been around 25 years old: she was in fact born in 1479. This is precisely the apparent age of the lady in the portrait.
However, Vasari’s indication does not agree with the letter of Antonio de Beatis , who visited Leonardo in Amboise, saw the painting at his house (it was later purchased by Francis I of France) and reported that it was a Florentine woman, loved by Giuliano de’ Medici, the third son of the Magnificent.
It was concluded that he left the portrait to the master upon his wedding to Filiberta of Savoy, so as not to make his bride jealous (but this wedding only took place in 1515).

Proposals for new identifications continue to this day: the imitations (and disguises) are innumerable.
A Giocondolatry and a Giocondoclasm were born: that is, adoration and desecration of the painting. Of the latter, the most striking examples are the various nude Mona Lisas, while the most illustrious example of imitation is perhaps Raphael’s Maddalena Strozzi, up to Duchamp’s Dada LHOOQ of 1919.

The Mona Lisa is so universally known and admired that I was very tempted to use it to create a scandal. I tried to make that mustache truly artistic.

Details of the Mona Lisa

Mona Lisa ‘s dark eyes , set in the beautiful, delicate contours of her eyelids, stare at the observer.

Today, however, only a minimal resemblance can be seen in what we see. In fact, neither eyebrows nor eyelashes are visible. The absence of eyebrows may also reflect the Florentine fashion of the time for plucking them, but it’s likely that they were inadvertently removed during a restoration.

Finally, the smile of the Mona Lisa.
The meaning of Mona Lisa’s famous smile has been the subject of countless studies. It is its slight asymmetry that makes it so enigmatic, along with a modeling so subtle that the transition from lips to skin is almost imperceptible. To achieve these effects, Leonardo used extremely thin layers of paint and developed the so-called sfumato technique to blend light and shadow.
