Botticelli’s Madonna of the Pomegranate was painted around 1487. This work
it is a tempera on panel created by the great Florentine painter Sandro Botticelli.
The use of the circular format, better known as tondo, focuses attention on the main characters, the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus , symmetrically surrounded by 3 angels on each side.
Botticelli’s use of tempera grassa was used to give his figures a lifelike appearance, better known as a “naturalistic” style typical of Renaissance painting.
The Virgin Mary gently holds the baby Jesus in her arms while holding a pomegranate in her left hand. The pomegranate on display has several different interpretations of its meaning in the religious piece.
The painting is currently on display at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.
In the painting, Madonna of the Pomegranate , Sandro Botticelli placed the Madonna surrounded by six angels at the center of the painting.
The angels surrounding the Virgin adore her with lilies and garlands of roses. Baby Jesus lies sweetly in Mary’s arms, holding a pomegranate with his mother.
Both the Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus show sad faces. The expressions of the Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus are meant to remind the viewer of the pain and torture the Son of God endured on the day of his crucifixion. Indeed, in this tempera, Botticelli creates a connection between Christ’s birth and death, a clear allusion to the Passion and Resurrection.
In the painting Madonna del Magnificat, Botticelli wants to give this fruit a symbolic meaning, covering it with an intense emotional value.
What can be noticed with careful analysis is that the pomegranate in the painting has been identified as an accurate representation of cardiac anatomy.
The peeled portion of the pomegranate shows non-symmetrical chambers, similar to the cardiac chambers of a heart.
Botticelli shows the internal spongy membrane, dividing the pomegranate into various spaces. These spaces represent the atria, ventricles, and the main pulmonary trunk.
The crown is divided into two parts, imitating the superior vena cava and the arch of the aorta with its three branches. The fruit is held in front of the left side of the chest, which overlaps the position of the heart.
In fact, at the end of the 15th century, Botticelli was introduced to the resurgence of interest in human anatomy and the recovery of medical knowledge lost since ancient times.
Renaissance artists were able to recover this lost knowledge through the dissection of cadavers.
During the Renaissance period, artists found in anatomy a sure path to a better understanding of the human body that would improve their artwork to be more lifelike.
Furthermore, the pomegranate serves as a symbol of Jesus’ full suffering and resurrection . In the Christian religion, pomegranates symbolize the passage from life to death and resurrection, as one will ultimately be reborn from the seeds that were left behind.
The red seeds displayed in the open pomegranate are meant to remind the viewer of Jesus’ bloodshed , which saved humanity. Botticelli shows the spongy internal membrane, exposing the arils (pods) into five spaces. These spaces represent the atria, ventricles, and the main pulmonary trunk. The crown is divided into two parts, imitating the superior vena cava and the arch of the aorta with its three branches. The fruit is also held in front of the left side of the chest, which overlaps with the position of the heart.
