The paintings from the Poplars series were created by Claude Monet in the summer and autumn of 1891.
The trees were located in a marsh along the banks of the Epte River, a few kilometers upstream from Monet’s house and studio.
To reach his floating painting studio that was moored in one location, he took a small boat up the nearby waterway to where it joined the main current.
There were three groups of paintings: in one group the paintings have imposing poplars coming out of the top edge of the canvas, in another group there are seven trees and in another group three or four poplars on the banks of the River Epte near Giverny .
The trees, which actually belonged to the municipality of Limetz, were auctioned off before Monet had completed all his paintings. At one point, Monet was forced to buy the trees because he hadn’t yet finished his paintings.
The Poplars series was created using a fairly simple subject. Poplars, as the name suggests, are based on trees, yet the artist used his considerable skill as an impressionist painter to depict them in a completely new and engaging way. Monet was an extremely prolific painter who used nature and his perceptions of the natural world extensively in his paintings. He used impressionism to express the impact that water, mountains, and even grass had on his thoughts. Each painting reflects the beauty of its surroundings, and some can even induce a sense of peace in viewers. Monet shows the poplars at different stages of their life.
In the late spring of 1891, Monet began painting the line of poplars seen in the series. They lined the stream near his home in Giverny . When Monet learned that the poplars along the Epte River were to be cut down, he paid to have them left standing.
The artist may have made an effort to capture these changes because they reminded him of the changes that all people experience. Each viewer can be inspired to think of different seasons in their own lives. As a skilled painter, Monet strives to shift the visual mood and break the dreariness of the uniform trunks. To begin with, the avant-garde is focused on a left-leaning viewpoint, so that each tree appears slightly shorter than the one before it. This technique creates a vanishing point on the far left.
