Claude Monet , returning from England, settled in the commune of Argenteuil and lived for 7 years northeast of Paris in the Val-d’Oise from 1871 to 1878.
These years were a period of great growth for the Impressionist painter. In the region around his new home, he found luminous landscapes that allowed him to explore the potential of plein air painting.
In Poppies and the Poppy Field Monet found a wonderful subject which he showed to the public at the first Impressionist exhibition held in the disused studio of the photographer Nadar in 1874.
Monet’s Poppies is one of the French master’s most famous paintings. This canvas depicts a simple walk in the fields on a summer’s day. The remarkably simple subject allows for experimentation with techniques and color compositions. Monet diluted the outlines and constructed a colorful rhythm with splashes of paint starting with a sprinkling of poppies.
Claude Monet’s Poppies is one of the first Impressionist paintings in history. The overall effect of the painting relies on a seemingly spatial quality and the absolute inconsistency of the brushstrokes, designed to convey the pure impression of the poppies.
Monet uses the intense, brilliant red of the poppies, which he occasionally sprinkles across the meadow, to heighten the overall brilliance of the color palette. The contrast is then rendered by the bluish green that tinges the tufts of grass caressed by the wind.
The subject of “ Monet’s Poppies ” is represented by an immense field of poppies that manages to decorate the entire meadow in the composition to a large extent.
The scene is set in the countryside on a summer day, and the technique for creating the poppies is very interesting.
In fact, Monet first created the base for the flowers with a sprinkling of color and then perfected the shapes using spots of color.
All this made it possible to highlight the large number of these flowers and create dynamism and movement without painting a large uniform patch of color.
The poppies in the foreground are slightly larger than those in the background. This simple touch of color gives a sense of depth, ensuring that the composition doesn’t appear to be entirely on one plane.
This painting is extremely delicate, thanks above all to the oil painting on canvas which gives the picture softness and delicacy, making the soft and delicate pastel colours stand out.
Furthermore, in the work there is no trace of preparatory drawing and therefore the colour is deposited directly onto the canvas, with quick and rapid brushstrokes.
Instead, the entire composition of “Monet’s Poppies” rests on a massive oblique structure, outlined as already mentioned by the figures descending from the hill, and by the horizontal line in the background which, following the curtain of trees, divides the lower part of the work, in which the more intense colours of the poppy field stand out, from the upper part, where a sky expands, almost completely veiled by large white clouds frayed by the light breeze.
