Description of the artwork

Renoir’s painting was initially more inclined towards landscape, as in Claude Monet, but soon moved decisively towards portraiture or, more generally, towards the representation of human subjects admirably inserted into their environment.

In fact, its colors are mobile and brilliant, in a continuous and changing mutual relationship and always sensitive to the infinite filterings that the sunlight undergoes as it passes through the treetops.

Shadows are not black, he repeated, no shadow is black.
It always has a color. Nature only knows colors: the
black and white are not colors.

One of the most perfect and balanced demonstrations of this theory of shadows is found in Renoir’s famous Moulin de la Galette , a painting sketched en plein air and subsequently completed in the studio.

The Moulin de la Galette Renoir

The Moulin de la Galette is a work created in 1876 , it was presented
the following year at the third Impressionist exhibition , the last in which Renoir participated.

The scene portrayed is that of an open-air popular dance set at the Moulin de la Galette, an old abandoned mill located on the heights of Montmartre, the picturesque northern district of Paris .

The name of the place refers to the sweets (galettes in French, precisely) that were offered as a drink included in the entrance fee of 25
cents.

Various figures, both men and women, are seated on chairs and benches among the trees. Some couples dance to the sound of a small orchestra in the background to the left, in an atmosphere of boisterous yet serene joy.
To execute the work, Renoir frequented the Moulin for six months, in order to better understand that small world which has its own typical aspect and, as his brother Edmond recalls, “immersed in the whirlwind of that popular festival”, he rendered the devilish movement with a verve that was stunning.

Renoir's composition and technique

Renoir’s work at the Moulin de la Galette was painted partly from life (having friends, girlfriends and a few models chosen from among the regulars of the place pose for him) and partly in his studio , where he simply reorganised the sketches he had taken on the spot. The painting is one of the masterpieces of Renoir’s artistic maturity.

Through a new and free use of colour the artist tries to suggest to us not only the sense of movement, which is already very difficult to convey, but even the collective state of mind and the simple joy of a festive afternoon .

In fact, form and colour become one : the former is constructed through the latter which, in turn, takes on a different significance in relation to the contrast between light and shadow and between warm and cold tones.
For example, observing the two dancing couples on the left, you can notice how the girls’ clothes stand out against the men’s clothes due to the different brightness (they are in fact much lighter) which makes them vibrate with colour, consequently defining both the shape of the bodies and the sensation of motion.

Instead, the apparent randomness of the representation hides a careful compositional evaluation, evidently the result of study of the classics. Although there are no established plans (there is no main subject), no character appears isolated, as they are inserted into a specific group (someone dancing, some chatting, some sitting at a table, some looking in a certain direction).

For this reason, the ensemble of these groups, uniformly flooded by the flickering light filtering through the treetops, determines the perspective depth of the entire scene in which, as can be clearly seen, the drawing plays an extremely marginal role.
