Puzzle Seurat is an important work, as it allows the observer to know the artist’s state of mind .
In a park on the banks of the Seine, Seurat paints the Sunday crowds of Parisians. Women in period-typical, highly fashionable clothing stroll, sheltering themselves with pretty parasols. Then come rowers resting after the competition, and then children playing composedly. Some pets follow their owners. A bourgeois couple leads a small monkey on a leash. Finally, the Seine flows to the left, and several small boats glide across the water.

Georges Seurat ‘s primary interest was to deepen his understanding of the behavior of light. Seurat is also defined as a Post-Impressionist artist , therefore also interested in recovering forms in paintings. Like the Impressionists, he was interested in applying scientific research into the behavior of light.

Georges Seurat’s La Grande Jatte is a painting that opened new horizons in art, and it is no coincidence that it is one of the most important works of the artistic movement known as Pointillism .

Puzzle Features

The 1000-piece Seurat Puzzle is one of the most fun and fascinating ways to discover art piece by piece.

Thanks to this beautiful 1000-piece art puzzle from the French brand Bluebird you can discover all the emotional strength and density of colors of the great French master, founder and leading exponent of Neo-Impressionism, Georges Seurat .

The Seraut puzzle represents the wonderful painting by the French painter George Seurat, created between 1884 and 1886, preserved at the Art Institute of Chicago .

When Seurat was about to begin the work, he spoke about it to his friend and critic Felix Fènéon, presenting it as a symbolic artistic ascension .
The canvas was first exhibited in 1886, the year that conventionally marks the end of Impressionism . Many mocked the work, only Fénéon perceived the painting’s innovation to the point of coining the term Neo-Impressionism .

Unlike Impressionist works, light and color must now follow objective criteria, leaving aside subjective emotions. Although Seurat often went to the island of La Grande Jatte to study and reproduce certain elements from life, as was typical of the Impressionists, he actually created his paintings primarily in the studio .

Seurat Puzzle A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte in detail

The 1000-piece Seraut puzzle by French brand Bluebird is a fascinating example of Neo-Impressionist art.

Seraut, interested in light phenomena, rejected the irregular brushstrokes of Impressionist painting, and instead devoted himself to pointillism , a technique that involves applying small, juxtaposed brushstrokes of pure color on a white background.

The Impressionist style marks a radical change in Western painting, blossoming mostly in the 1870s.
In the following two decades, several young painters tried to develop the principles of Impressionism in a completely personal way.

These artists are generally divided into two groups: the Post-Impressionists, among whom we must remember Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Paul Cézanne, and the Neo-Impressionists, who include Georges Seurat and Paul Signac.

Description of the artwork

The painting shows numerous people , all belonging to the bourgeoisie, enjoying themselves and idling along the Seine on a Sunday afternoon . In the foreground, on the right, a couple is immediately visible.

Both very elegant, he wears a top hat and has a cigar in his hand, she has a hat decorated with red flowers on her head, she holds a parasol in her hand and her skirt has the cul-de-Paris, a special padding that serves to make the dress more voluminous.

However, in this context Seurat makes the figure of the lady grotesque, probably because his aim is to mock the obsessions of the bourgeois social class, the true protagonist of the Belle Époque.
The woman is leading a little monkey on a leash, one of the few subjects in the painting to which Seurat dedicated numerous life studies.

There are many other individuals reclining, sunbathing or simply lounging, like the smoker wearing the red vest in the foreground. On the left is the Seine, with several boats floating along it and people admiring the view, including, in the background and in the distance, two officers.

Among the most interesting figures is the woman fishing. Seurat believed that women’s roles should not be limited to the home. Rather, they should be able to engage in other activities, including typically male hobbies like fishing.
However, there is also another interpretation according to which the fishing rod symbolizes the insatiable thirst of men. A truly disconcerting interpretation, but one that draws inspiration from the homophony of the two French verbs pêcher (to fish) and pécher (to sin).

Puzzle Seurat George

Seurat's method

The method he devised was to place small touches of pure colour on the canvas, producing an effect of great luminosity .

The critic Felix Fenéon coined the term pointillism to refer to this painting technique that uses a myriad of dots of color. Although Seurat preferred the term divisionism.
Seurat’s first large-scale painting, Bathers at Asnières , clearly demonstrates the application of his color theories. It was rejected at the official Salon but exhibited at the Salon des Refuses. Its sister work, Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, arguably his most famous painting, was exhibited at the Seventh Impressionist Exhibition.

Georges Seurat was often considered a Symbolist, though the latter later distanced themselves from him. But in reality, Seurat was a solitary, reserved man, constantly at work in his studio. The artist was so dedicated to his work and so secluded that until his death, few people knew of the existence of his wife and son. His wife, Madeleine Knobloch, is depicted in the painting Woman Powdering Herself, painted in 1890.

Towards the end of his life, Seurat devoted himself to painting seascapes and entertainment subjects with a particular interest in dance and the circus, which was the subject of his last painting.
