Description of the artwork

The subject depicted in the puzzle Starry Night by Van Gogh was created in 1889, the same year in which he painted another oil painting entitled Cypresses .

In both works, these imposing trees , with their thick, tormented foliage, represent a fundamental symbolic element, despite the different settings.

In Van Gogh’s Starry Night, the artist recreates the apparent enchanted magic of a clear moonlit night thanks also to the adoption of a very particular painting technique.

In fact, the paint, of a very fluid consistency, is applied with a minimal thickness, in small, close touches, leaving empty spaces here and there, through which the texture of the underlying canvas can also be glimpsed, which, in correspondence with the stars, simulates their trembling.
In this way the painting takes on a bright but cold tone at the same time, which conveys the rarefied and almost milky atmosphere of the starry night .

In Cypresses , on the contrary, the warm light of day triumphs . And here too, Van Gogh’s technique fully supports his expressive needs.

The colour, therefore, is full and thick, almost modelled, rather than spread, like
This can be clearly seen from the thick, dense brush strokes that give it body and volume.

The clear light of day and the warmth of the sun seem to give life and material concreteness to the cypress, its galbuli (the characteristic woody fruits), the bushes and the flowers, but they also make the air that surrounds everything palpable.

Van Gogh's Starry Night

The peace emanating from the paintings of the Arles period was short-lived for the artist. About two years later, he would meet his death in a ripe wheat field.

Meanwhile, during his stay in the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole facility for the mentally ill, near Saint-Rémy de Provence, Vincent’s canvases took on symbolic meanings dear to his friend Gauguin and never forgotten by Van Gogh, while the colours, distributed in greater quantity over the surface of the painting, allowed for a technique close to modelling.

The subject of the Van Gogh Starry Night puzzle is a work that is immediately grasped, of great charm, with a strong evocative power, apparently simple, but of a very complex nature.

In the foreground the artist painted a tall, dark cypress tree, one of the recurring subjects during his stay in Saint-Rémy, a “difficult” subject, as Vincent wrote several times.

In a small valley lies the village of Saint-Rémy, or memories of his native village, dominated by the spire of a bell tower. To the right, an olive grove thrives. In the background, the high hills of the Alpilles cut the canvas diagonally, so that most of the pictorial surface is occupied by the orange crescent moon and the vast starry sky.

The cypress is almost the aspiration to infinity , the strength of the sought-after peace, a mirror of Van Gogh’s soul. The landscape, at first sight idyllic and reconciling, in fact also speaks another language, the powerful one of romantic visions of a terribly grandiose nature.

Furthermore, the blue hills in the night, treated with wavy and parallel lines, no longer have the reassuring appearance of reliefs combed by the wind , gilded and warmed by the sun, but seem like threatening washing waters, of which the curves of the olive trees are the most advanced and boiling fringes.

Finally , the sky, with its more or less bright, watchful stars , seems to be crossed by dangerous and aggressive fireballs dragged in the dense current of space, which shapes itself into titanic and swirling waves, as if responding to an implacable necessity.
