Goodwife Fox was known for her great cunning and was very proud of it. However, she had never managed to pull a trick on the stork.
The stork was wary: no one could boast of having tricked her; Gossip Fox decided to do it herself.
After thinking and thinking, she finally thought she had found the answer and decided to invite the stork to lunch.
An invitation to dinner is the most innocent thing in the world, and the stork accepted without much persuasion. On the appointed day, he put on his beautiful spring hat trimmed with a wide ribbon and went to the fox.
The fox had done everything right, setting the table under the pergola, covered with a beautiful white tablecloth, on which were arranged the plates, glasses, and the flask of wine. There was also a beautiful basket filled with fragrant flowers.
The stork sat down, very happy and hungry, but the fox came from the kitchen bringing only a pot of broth.
“ My dear friend, I only have broth ,” he said, chuckling. “ But I assure you, it’s delicious, made with incredibly tender veal. Enjoy! ”
And, after tying her napkin, she began to drink greedily.
The poor stork, however, was left speechless: his plate was wide and shallow, so he could barely dip the tip of his beak into the broth. He couldn’t swallow a drop!
“ Don’t you want it? Don’t you like it? ” asked the sly fox.
“ Truly, I … ” stammered the stork; but the fox interrupted him: “I don’t want to force you. Leave the broth alone. I’ll drink it. ”
The stork went away disappointed and annoyed, while the fox laughed out loud.
But two days later it was the stork who invited the fox.
“ My friend, do you want to come to lunch with me tomorrow? ”
“ Certainly! ” replied the fox happily. And the next day he went.
The stork had also set the table under the pergola with two elegant placemats and sprigs of flowers. The fox licked his lips, because he could smell a delicious aroma coming from the kitchen. But when the stork brought the lunch,
He was truly surprised: in fact, the food was not served on plates, but in pot-bellied vases with long, narrow necks.
The stork stuck his beak in and began to extract the tasty morsels; the fox tried in vain to reach the bottom of the jar.
His muzzle didn’t even reach the mouth, and he flayed his whiskers in vain trying to push it further down.
“ Aren’t you hungry, my friend? ” asked the sly stork. Don’t you like this sauce? I’m sorry, because I didn’t make anything else. ”
“ Actually, I… ” stammered the fox. But the stork interrupted him.
“ No, no, I don’t want to force you. I’ll eat your share. ”
And indeed, in the blink of an eye, he also cleaned the fox’s vase.
“Thanks for the company, dear friend. I’m just sorry you had to…
” I ate so little ,” said the stork later, accompanying the fox to
at the garden gate.
And the fox went away, happy to have red fur, because that way he wouldn’t
He saw that she was blushing with shame. “What goes around comes around,” says the proverb!
The moral of the fable “The Fox and the Stork” is as simple as it is important: do not do to others what you would not want done to you.
This morality takes up the teaching of the Golden Rule.
The Golden Rule is a law present in all major religious and wisdom currents across the world’s diverse cultures. Indeed, it serves as a synthesis of all universal ethical codes.
In fact, the presence of the Golden Rule dates back to 3000 BC in the Indian Vedic tradition: “ Do not do to others what you do not want done to you; and wish for others what you wish and expect for yourself. ”
Among the oldest and most well-known citations of the Golden Rule we can refer to Confucius, who lived in China between the 6th and 5th centuries BC.
While in Judaism the Golden Rule appears from 200 BC in the book of Tobit, then elaborated in a positive sense in the teaching of Jesus Christ: “ Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. ”
In the Middle Ages it was included in the Rule of Saint Benedict and that of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Today, more than ever, the Golden Rule deserves special attention in our times, not because it is a religious rule, but precisely because it has the value of a universally shared “secular” rule. Indeed, by respecting and promoting this teaching, especially in continuity with the most ancient cultural and religious traditions, we can seek to create an existential path in which brotherhood is a conscious choice shared by all.
