Build and discover the fantastic ancient map puzzle of Venice by Ludovico Ughi made in 1729.
Ludovico Ughi’s map was the first to be created with accurate field surveys, and is therefore extremely important in the history of Venetian cartography.

Ughi’s map, a map of considerable size (147 x 263 cm), had an extraordinary impact and success, so much so that in the following decades the most important Venetian publishers (Furlanetto, Giampiccoli and Viero) republished it several times, bitterly competing for the printing rights.

Puzzle Art thanks to the new splendid edition of the Architoys brand is pleased to offer you this wonderful 540-piece puzzle.

Description of the city plan of Venice

Lodovico Ughi ‘s map of Venice , an original document measuring 128 x 177 cm from 1729, is an impressive work of artistic, scientific, and documentary significance. The highly detailed map is composed of eight sheets , arranged in two rows, which, in addition to the city map, feature a set of special elements: a large compass rose, a poem by Jacopo Sannazaro held by a putto, an allegory of Venice drawn by Sebastiano Ricci, a composition with the Morosini family insignia, and a label with the author’s dedication to Doge Aloysio Mocenigo. On the sides are sixteen small views of the city by the painter Carlevarijs, and finally, at the bottom, a description of the city.

Ludovico Ughi ‘s plan from 1729

The project aims to fill a historiographical gap in studies of supply and demand in the pre-industrial age through an interdisciplinary methodology. A large number of sources contain an implicit geographical reference, but these documents are in textual form and therefore lack reference maps. Historians struggle to analyze the geographical information in these sources, and as a result, much information relating to social and economic phenomena is overlooked in studies.

To achieve the project’s objective and visualize the archival documents, it is crucial to have a map as chronologically accurate as possible to the time of the documents. The main reason Ludovico Ughi’s map is often excluded from historical cartography digitization projects is the technical difficulty of transforming it into a georeferenced map. On the other hand, while GIS allows researchers to process geographic information in innovative ways, it tends to exclude data that cannot be represented as points, lines, polygons, or pixels. The difficulty of locating information on an adequate historical map means that studies often completely neglect the spatial and geographical analysis that plays an important role in fully understanding not only the evolution of the city but also the dynamics of market behavior.
