An accomplished artist- draughtsman and cartographer, Clarke devoted the better part of a decade to producing a series of maps of European cities.
Although they were not entirely original reliefs, he traveled frequently to verify the points in question and illustrated them with architectural views and cameos that were usually arranged along the foot of each sheet.
Clarke’s Plan of Ancient Rome, with architectural views, was engraved by J. and C. Walker and published under the superintendence of the Society in 1830, and had a companion Plan of Modern Rome.
Under the same auspices his map of Warsaw (engraved by T. E. Nicholson) is dated 1831, his Milan and Frankfurt am Main 1832, his Berlin and Turin, with three views, his Porto, his Lisbon from 1833; while his Paris and St. Petersburg are from 1834.
William Barnard Clarke was the founding president of the Architectural Society of London in 1831 and oversaw the restoration of the Eleanor Cross at Waltham Cross in 1831–32. Producing a celebrated series of maps or plans of European and Russian cities, and with a keen interest in the discoveries at Pompeii, he traveled extensively in Europe and from 1840 had his home and collections in the Grand Duchy of Baden.
