The Last Judgement is one of the most famous and dramatic frescoes in the history of art, painted by Michelangelo Buonarroti between 1536 and 1541 on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. The work depicts the apocalyptic moment of the Last Judgement, in which the risen Christ, at the center of the composition, separates the blessed destined for salvation from the damned condemned to hell.
The fresco is an immense and overwhelming vision of bodies in motion, sculpted in color with plastic and expressive force. Around Christ, saints, angels, and resurrected souls swirl in an emotional whirlwind that blurs every distinction between heaven and earth. Below, the souls cast into hell writhe among monsters and devils; above, the elect ascend toward the light.
The figure of Mary, next to Christ, appears absorbed, in silent intercession. Among the most notable details is Saint Bartholomew, holding his flayed skin, his face believed to be a self-portrait of Michelangelo, a symbol of human fragility and redemption.
The work’s style marks the transition from the Renaissance to Mannerism: Michelangelo abandons classical balance for a more powerful language, charged with tension and spirituality. The Last Judgment is not just a biblical tale, but a profound meditation on existence, faith, and the destiny of man.
The fresco covers a surface area of approximately 13.7 x 12.2 meters and features over 400 figures. The composition is divided into three main zones:
The Sistine Chapel is one of the most iconic and visited places in the world, an absolute masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance and the beating heart of Vatican City. Built between 1475 and 1481 at the behest of Pope Sixtus IV, from whom it takes its name, the chapel is located within the Apostolic Palace and still hosts the conclave for the election of the Pope.
Architecturally, the chapel’s proportions are inspired by the Temple of Solomon, according to biblical tradition. It is approximately 40 meters long, 13 meters wide, and 20 meters high, with a simple rectangular structure, yet embellished with extraordinarily rich interior decoration.
The true marvel, however, lies within: the set of frescoes that cover the walls, and especially the vault and altar wall, painted by Michelangelo Buonarroti, who transformed the Sistine Chapel into a total work of art.
Between 1508 and 1512, Michelangelo painted the vault at the behest of Pope Julius II. The artist, until then known primarily as a sculptor, created a grandiose and complex cycle of images, which includes:
The vault is a powerful, dynamic and spiritual visual narrative, expressing the greatness of man and his creator.
About thirty years later, Michelangelo was recalled by Pope Clement VII to fresco the altar wall as well, where he created The Last Judgement , an apocalyptic vision of humanity’s destiny. Christ, at the center of the composition, judges souls among angels, saints, the blessed, and the damned in a dramatic whirlwind that shatters the Renaissance equilibrium.
