Alphonse Mucha perfectly captured the spirit of change and made women, draped in floral motifs, the protagonists of his works. Not yet thirty, in Paris, the artist rode the advertising wave with meticulously crafted and detailed posters. His female figures were both ethereal and femme fatale . It was a great innovation, rediscovering the communicative potential of women.
Mucha is the prophet of a new artistic movement, which will bear his name: the Mucha style.
But it is in the decorative lithographic panels that nature emerges in all its primordial power. Water lilies and goddesses move in a dreamlike atmosphere . Their hair is voluminous and studded with flowers and precious stones, their robes flowing and princess-like. They are proud, heroic, and courageous women .
Mucha frames them in series of four, demonstrating the potential of numbers in defining the multiple facets of the female figure. The artist created numerous versions of the “ Four Seasons ” over the course of his career. Every small element of the panel is finely studied. The women wear different clothes and hairstyles. Each looks in a different direction and assumes a different pose, yet the single print is not self-contained. The choice of a lithographic series requires that all the works be connected in a dance that follows the course of time and begins again cyclically. This is also evident in the work “The Hours of the Day”.
Women change over time. At the beginning of the twentieth century, they assert themselves in the new social landscape. They are strong, determined, and enterprising. But they never lose their refined and sensitive touch. A combination evoked by the delicacy of Mucha’s flowers. The woman, overwhelmed by the frenzy of the city, rediscovers the primordial aura of nature through art.
It was early 1895 when Mucha’s poster advertising the play Gismonda , starring actress Sarah Bernhardt, was released. The actress was so impressed that she signed an exclusive six-year contract with the artist, which is why we find her portrait in several of his works.
By the time his contract with Sarah Bernhardt ended, Mucha’s style was well-defined and the characteristic central female figure was a motif that recurred in his later works, even when he was creating advertising posters for industries and commercial establishments: whether for biscuits, liqueurs or cigarettes, Mucha’s women were the central and predominant element of the composition.
Mucha’s women maintain a pensive and dreamy air, always wrapped in thick, wavy hair, an eye-catching element that leaves the actual object of the advertisement almost secondary, identified more by the writing than the drawing. Every detail of the woman is meticulously crafted: the draped and finely decorated dresses, the jewelry adorning the head and body… Indeed, by observing the jewelry in his drawings, the Parisian jeweler Georges Fouquet found inspiration for his boutique, commissioning Mucha to design jewelry for him and, later, to redesign the entire Fouquet jewelry store.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Alfons Mucha was able to transform the promotion of shows and products into works, bringing art into the streets, hanging on the walls of houses or in the pages of newspapers.
The women who grace his posters have become icons of Art Nouveau.
The Czech artist Alfons Mucha was a painter and sculptor among the main exponents of Art Nouveau, commonly known in Italy as “Stile Liberty”.
The beautiful women portrayed in his works, with radiant and sensual smiles, are considered a true icon of the Belle Epoque .
The work that best demonstrates the artist’s exceptional skill was created in 1896: The Four Seasons.
