In this painting, Rowers at Chatou , Renoir returned to one of his favorite spots along the Seine to re-explore the beauty of the shimmering water. True to Impressionist practice, the artist focuses on the glorious spectrum of outdoor light as it floods the landscape. With a technique that is both fiery and rigorously controlled, he recomposes his own soft vision of nature’s splendor in paint.
Yet he is also sensitive to the richness of contrasting textures that greet his gaze, and he adjusts his brushstrokes to evoke not only color but the “feel” of grass, water, or a windy, cloudy sky. The fact that he accomplished this dual task without sacrificing the internal coherence of his technique, or losing a general sense of artistic personality, shows how Renoir fully assimilated the Impressionist method to his own purposes. Almost casually, he captures the landscape’s expansiveness and the happy sharing of the group of four figures sketched in the lower left of the composition.
The very presence of the boaters suggests another characteristic of Renoir’s art. Although, like other members of the Impressionist group, he painted landscapes for himself, he loved to include his friends in his canvases. The relationship between the figures and their positioning is complete. They are seen within nature, not separated from it. They share the same qualities of texture, light, and color, as they blend effortlessly with the beauty of their surroundings.
