Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party is one of the most famous and well-known subjects in the history of modern and Impressionist art. Indeed, this work embodies all the elements of the Impressionist movement and the birth of the artistic transformations of the twentieth century.

The painting was probably one of the last Renoir produced before his trip to Italy and his subsequent artistic career. Indeed, already in this work, one can clearly sense the emergence of a new stylistic direction . Renoir tends toward a more constructive nature in the figures he portrays and markedly models their volumes.

Description of the artwork

This is a canvas painted after the publication of an article by Emile Zola who, having initially been one of the main supporters of the Impressionists , now accuses them of the fact that none of them had understood with strength and clarity the new formula, which we find fragmented in all the paintings they produced.

They never keep their promises; they stammer without being able to speak.

The painting represents a breakfast at the restaurant La Fournaise in Chatou , a village on the Seine not far from Bougival. The atmosphere is less popular than that of La Grenouillère and the patrons are mainly sportsmen who, after
After rowing the canoe, they take a well-deserved rest, together with friends who have come to accompany them.

The scene is set on the open veranda of the restaurant, where fourteen characters are chatting amiably after eating together. The rowers’ presence is evidently a pretext for yet another open-air performance , which Renoir sketched out in front of the same tables still strewn with the remains of the meal, amid the comments of his friends and the laughter of the girls.
The clear light of the early summer afternoon, filtered through the striped awning, floods the scene with pink reflections, which are contrasted by the greenish background of the marsh vegetation.

Renoir’s attention is focused above all on colours , from whose skilful juxtaposition (warm and cold, light and dark, primary and complementary) the volumes and perspective take shape.
The girls’ faces are outlined in areas of color: lips, eyes, noses, hair, and hats. Here, too, there’s no trace of drawing, but the forms emerge equally, clear and distinct, almost vibrating with their own motion.

The resulting atmosphere is one of extraordinary naturalness , made even more lively and festive by the complex interplay of glances that expressively links the various characters together.
The table setting, finally, constitutes a painting within the painting. Like Manet in the Bar at the Folies Bergère , in fact, Renoir proposes a superb still life. In it, the lightness of the bottles and crystal is contrasted by the compact mass of the fruit and the cognac barrel behind it, while
the breadcrumbs and the white napkin left carelessly on the tablecloth evoke a stunning naturalism

The Bathers

In these large Bathers , painted by Renoir a few months before his death, when he was already semi-paralyzed, the artist shows that he wanted to give more volume and consistency to the figures , returning to that separation between characters and background that the colorful atmospheres of the Moulin de la Galette and the Luncheon of the Boating Party had brilliantly unified.

In fact, it is very strong and the diversity of the technique used for the landscape, a fantastic vision with strong impressionist intentions, compared to that chosen for the figures.
with turned shapes, a clear reminder of the sixteenth-century portraiture admired years before in Italian museums.
The definition of the two flourishing female bodies in the foreground is achieved through broad, uniform fields of colour, whose exaggerated roundness also represents a final, joyful hymn to life by the now infirm artist.

The ideal reference to the Venuses of Giorgione and Titian is more than evident, which further contributes to isolating the figures from the background, as if they had their own life and colours.

After all, we are now in the 20th century, and Impressionism has long since exhausted its full potential. Each of those who had generously embraced it (and Renoir was undoubtedly among them) now attempts to transcend its limitations in their own personal way, drawing on their own education and obeying only their own sensibilities.
